The silly season is upon us all, so here are some wise words for you all to consider........ be safe for the holidays.
Everyone looks forward to the holidays!
We'll have more time for each other. We won't have to worry about work.
Being on holiday sounds as if we'll have the right atmosphere for some great sex – and it never seems to happen that way. Which is so unfair! After working so hard throughout the year, it's so tempting to put big expectations on your time out. It can make tempers very frayed when it doesn't work out the way we wanted.
Here are some things to watch out for :
Be careful of your alcohol consumption. A lot of people drink more during their time off, and that's not good for your sex life. You'll want to – even more than usual, but your ability will be (shall we say) not the best. Alcohol slows down arousal and orgasm, which is frustrating and annoying! It can also lead us into saying things we wouldn't ordinarily come out with. Honesty is great when it comes to sex, but drunken arguments are not.
If you're away on holiday make sure you take protection. Condoms? Birth control pills? Don't leave it to chance, that never ends well. No one can be lucky forever! Are you really up to dealing with the possible consequences? This goes for people in established relationships as well – make sure you have everything you need before driving off to the beach.
Some people don't go away, but stay at home to catch up on all those jobs that've slipped over the year. This can be really frustrating as there seems to be so much to do. People are tired doing unaccustomed labour and falling asleep on the couch after dinner – it's a change from the office. Don't try to do too much. Remember, it's supposed to be a refreshing break, not a sprint to the finish line!
You might already be sleep deprived. So many people are, coming into the holiday season. Make sure your health and sleep are in order before you make big plans for between the sheets. Sometimes a few nights of no pressure to catch up on sleep is the best prescription.
Family pressures can be a pain and make tempers very short. We already know this is not good for a romantic encounter. Coping with family members you haven't seen for a while, or having the kids underfoot, or even feeling overworked (as many people do who host Christmas gatherings) isn't good for your sex life. Don't be grumpy when it could easily avoided. Maybe you just need a good nights sleep?
Don't make huge plans for New Years Eve etc. There's nothing like performance anxiety to ruin things! Just enjoy each others company, count to ten, and catch up on your sleep. There is always another day, and stress never helped anyone enjoy their partner.
Sometimes touch is all you need. And there's nothing wrong with that, at all.

One fairytale about relationships and sex that trips people up every time …
“If they really loved me, they'd know exactly what I want in bed!”
This is such a sweet thing but unfortunately it's completely untrue. It can also be the source of so much resentment and bitterness.
There are so many ways you can communicate with your partner, it's just a question of finding the way that suits you both the best.
Try writing them a letter, or even a post card or a sticky post-it note. Or bring up a sex-related topic from the news. Find out about relationship classes or communication workshops. Using only body language to communicate can be hysterically funny as well as really useful! You both set a time limit and until that time you're not allowed to say a word but can only express yourselves physically. Become two actors in a porn dvd and be as grubby and explicit as you can. This can work well if you start with describing what your partner is doing … if you're shy, try describing what they're doing while they massage your back and go from there. You might discover a latent talent!
Another way to spark conversation is to watch a dvd that crosses into soft porn but doesn't make anyone uncomfortable. We might run another article with some recommendations from Sue!
Ask your lover if they have any sexual fantasies. Some people might emphatically deny this, so a way around is to ask – what would be the ideal scenario for them for a romantic evening? If money was no object, what would they like to do? You might find that it is purely a scenario of a woman having no kids to look after, and time to relax in the bath and be fed strawberries. Or even just to have someone else to cook dinner. Listen carefully and look for clues that you can surprise her with!
It seems to be quite common for men to be into the visual side of things, and sometimes leaving a candle burning or walking around in a great set of lingerie can really be appreciated.
But as we've discussed before it can be such a huge mistake when it comes to making assumptions about people's preferences when it comes to sex, so the best thing is to just ask. Be gentle and non judgmental – don't show any shock or surprise, but just listen carefully and encourage your partner to feel safe.
Out of interest - the thing that seems to interfere with women's communication when it comes to sex is probably self esteem, but the main issue for men is performance anxiety.
So think it through, take a deep breath and do something constructive about your relationship. You don't have to achieve everything in one conversation and it will take time to develop trust and confidence, but it can be done. And you can start today.

Many people are fine in theory with talking to their partner about a range of intimate topics, but when it comes down to actually doing it, they have a bit more trouble.
What are some things to remember when having a conversation about such private issues? Especially when there is a history of miscommunication and things have not been right for a while.
Firstly think about where to instigate the conversation. Pick your moment, don't try talking when he has just got home from work, or when she is trying to cook the dinner. Wait until you are both relatively relaxed and there is nothing urgent going on. Choose a place and time that isn't emotionally charged – these discussions are best kept away from the bedroom, and especially not when you are both getting ready to sleep.
It's easy to start with something like 'you always leave it to me to …' or 'I'm sick of the way you never ..'
Try to keep these phrases right out of what you're saying. Let's face it, there's no point in adding fuel to the fire. There's no point in stirring things up and going over the past ' you're here to fix the future. If the other person is feeling defensive to start with, and you open with a missile like that, your house will become a battle zone! If they feel attacked, they'll respond aggressively and you don't want that!
Perhaps stick to what your personal feelings are. If they can hear and understand how you are feeling, it might give them food for thought. Try beginning a sentence with “I feel as though ...” rather than “You always ...” ; it can be really helpful. It takes the emphasis away from their behaviour (so they don't have to feel guilty or defensive) and back on how you feel. You might have to give them time to process though – don't expect answers immediately.
Another thing that you will need to think about, is the need to ask questions. You might have ideas in your head that are not related to what is actually going on. So make sure you clarify everything. There's no harm in making sure you have the details right, especially when you are dealing with such an important thing as your partner and relationship.
Listen intently. This can be hard, especially if things are sliding towards getting heated. But when you're in doubt, say nothing. This does NOT mean sulk, it means take the time you need to think on what you are hearing, and to make absolutely sure you have understood what they are telling you.
Finally, don't interrupt them when they're speaking. Be careful of how you respond to them – these conversations can be really fraught. But if you stay calm and non confrontational, you might be amazed at what progress can be made.
Often, a person complains about how their other half has no interest in the things they want to do sexually. They say that the relationship is 'boring', or they infer that their partner is not interested any more. All sorts of assumptions are made, and a lot of the time these are untrue. Years of miscommunication can create some real wounds, and it is not always easy to repair the damage. But it's not impossible.
Don't give up on things yet, but try another tactic to see if communication can be reopened.

Robert Epstein is a psychologist from the United States, who has done research into whether or not people can be happy in a marriage without sex. The 'official' definition of 'sexless' is when sex occurs less than once a month, or less than ten times a year.
That's great that Robert Epstein has a definition but how does that relate to you, reading this article?
The important factor in a marriage is whether the people concerned are happy with how much sex they get. Do you really care what some research person in the States thinks about how much sex people are having?
There are so many factors that influence happiness within a relationship. Some people have weekly sex but no communication or shared time apart from that. Sex under obligation is different to sex that is spontaneous and fun. Sex once a month that leaves both people satisfied and happy is different to sex three times a week, after which both lie there on opposite sides of the bed wondering why that just happened.
So the real question is, how happy are both people with the level of sexual intimacy. That can be a tricky question – and it can be a very difficult subject to talk about. We see sex everywhere in the media but most research and clinical studies show that people find it really difficult to talk to their partner about their sexual relationship.
Why do people worry so much about talking to their partner about sex?
Sometimes it's because the person is afraid that talking about sex will lead to the other person demanding more sex.
Sometimes it's because the person doesn't want to embarrass the other person, or create arguments so they don't mention that the sexual 'routine' isn't working, that the lingerie and effort has been replaced by trackies and a sweatshirt, or that the 'seduction' has been completely replaced by apathy.
Sometimes the fear of rejection is just too frightening so the entire subject is avoided.
Avoiding the entire topic can never be interpreted in a positive way. Really, the more effort you make to take care of your relationship the more intimate you and your partner will feel with each other
Becoming More Comfortable Talking about Sex
Choose a private time to talk when you're both relaxed.
Use humour, keep it light-hearted.
Bring up a time or memory that was positive for both of you, share a compliment.
If you feel awkward or unsure, tell your partner. Be honest so they know you are genuinely making an effort.
If something is keeping you from being sexual, emphasis that it does not equal lack of love or interest in them as a person.
Make sure you tell them the great things about your relationship, don't make it all negatives … if you tell them that tiny thing you love about them, it might be something they've never realised and make all the difference in promoting a positive, loving atmosphere between you.

Rekindling the spark.....................
This week, we'll look at some practical ways you can make a difference for yourself, your partner, and your relationship.
1. The old cliché is that people get together and let themselves go. They stop making an effort and become complacent. Without any fuss or blame, think about whether you have stopped giving yourself the care and attention that you need. Do you do anything physical and fun, such as playing squash, going for walks with your friends, or spending time at the gym? When was the last time you had a medical checkup? Are there any nagging health concerns that you have been ignoring 'until you've got time?' Well, just the fact that you are reading this right now is your wake-up call! Make that appointment today!
2. Have a look at your surroundings. Is your home welcoming and comfortable? Are there any big cleaning projects you've been meaning to do, but have lost inspiration for? Start on the lounge and living areas first, even if it's only throwing the objects scattered around into the right bedrooms. If your surroundings are orderly you'll feel so much more relaxed and happy, and that can only be good for you and your relationship!
3. This evening, try turning tv off. Switch the modem off as well. Maybe some quiet music would be nice, but apart from that why not have an evening of talking to and relaxing with each other. We humans can waste an awful lot of time watching rubbish on tv … and did you know we have more activity in our brains while sleeping than watching tv?
4. Are you and your partner stuck in a rut? This is where most people can come up with a million reasons why they are far too busy and other things are far more important than spending time with their partner. When you are eating the same meals on the same nights, seeing the same people, doing the same things and only crossing paths when you fall into bed exhausted, it is time to do something. Life is not all about ferrying the children around or spending hours at work because you are indispensible. No one is. There is always another job, there will not always be another wife or husband or son or daughter.
5. If you find yourself arguing, stick to the actual issue at hand. It's not fair to dredge up stuff from the past. If they're late home from work and dinner is in the oven baked dry, it's fair enough to a bit annoyed, but not fair enough to bring up the time they were rude to your mother over Christmas dinner in 2005. Fight fair! (that is probably another whole series of articles in itself).
The great thing is that in New Zealand we are getting close to summer. Daylight saving means that there is more time available after work, and the weather is improving.
Take the opportunity to spend some time together without pressure,
and enjoy each other for who you are.

Rekindling the spark: the first in a series of articles regarding real life relationships.
We've all watched the movies and read the novels - we know that everyone falls blissfully in love and lives happily ever after.
No one ever gets laid off from work or puts on weight or realises that whatever else is going on - they're getting older, and tired, and things aren't what they used to be!
Everyone in a long term relationship has had these thoughts, you're not alone!
This series of articles will discuss the reality of relationships, and what we can do to make sure the sands of time don't find us washed up on the beach!
Just the fact that you're reading this article is a step in the right direction.
1. Research has shown that the more you give, the more you love. It seems strange as it seems that the more you give the more the person should love and appreciate you ... but it doesn't work that way. If you do everything you can to express caring and attention to your partner, this will assist in giving you back that 'loving feeling'. It helps rekindle the original thoughts and feelings you had when your relationship was new.
Remember those romantic dinners you used to cook? remember how you rushed home from work to shower and get ready to take your new flame out? even the times you brought them a flower or breakfast in bed ... that's the feeling we're aiming for!
2. How many times during the last week have you spent time together doing something fun? Did you go out purely to enjoy an event together? did you get to spend time in the car just talking, instead of rushing to get to kids sport? Think back. What did you and your partner really enjoy doing when you first got together? Might it be dancing lessons, a trip to the library or the movies, or just working in the garden together planting a new special shrub you both like.
3. What is a wonderful memory you share with your partner? perhaps it is a trip overseas, or a weekend away, or the moment you walked into the new house you'd just purchased together. Some time this week, think about bringing this up to your partner and reminding them of that special day. You might be surprised at the way the conversation goes!
4. Think about the special qualities that first attracted you to your partner. What really made them stand out in the crowd? now if you're really brave you'll write those qualities down on a piece of paper and give them to your parter to read!
